Music Video Analysis 6- Carried Away by Passion Pit

Music Video Analysis- Carried Away by Passion Pit

Performance: Narrative
0:1

As part of our research, we were told to watch the music videos of some bands that fit our band's genre or image. I chose to look at some of Passion Pit's videos, because whilst their sound might be slightly different to Arctic Monkey's, their target audience is the same demographic, and therefore should include the features that our target audience find entertaining, and the themes that they want in the music videos they watch.

The video that I decided to evaluate, for the song Carried Away, centres on a couple who are having problems.  Despite the topic being quite serious, the narrative is displayed in quite a fun and unique way, to make the viewer sympathise with the couple- the audience want them to be together, despite the issues that they are facing.

The thing about this music video that caught my eye almost instantly is the camera movement. The camera is rarely ever stationary, and I personally link this to the fast moving pace of the song, but also how the couple's relationship is changing into something new, something that is never stationary. This can also be related to the amount of graphic matches seen in the video.
Shots also very important, there are a lot of close up     and mid shots. I think that this is because these shots show a lot of the character's emotions, and because there isn't a lot of time for the audience to get to know the character- this intimacy and intensity of the shots are crucial.

Editing is also one of the key features in this music      video- there are many graphic matches that make the video more entertaining and interesting to watch.

Obviously, the only sound in the music video is the song itself, but this music video has a pause at the start between the intro and the actual song. The director also uses subtitles at the bottom of the screen. This is an important feature of the video because it helps the audience understand pivotal points of the plot. Later in the video, these subtitles transform into a superimposition, and the words start flying around.

Finally, the director uses colors such as purple, white and red throughout the video. This is important as red is a colour that is related to love, anger and passion, purple is the combination of peace, pride and mystery. These relate to the issues shown in the video,as it is a about a couple, who are in love (red), but argue a lot (also red),and are too proud (purple) to genuinely work through their issues.
